Today, a pastiche.

Let me begin by giving a hearty congratulations to Taoufik Makhloufi who won the gold in the 1,500 meter, masha’Allah!

Taoufik Makhloufi wins the 1,500 gold, masha’Allah!

The wonderful quote I have found for today is:

“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.”

This was said by John Quincy Adams, the 6th American president, and certainly would apply to all the athletes who have been competing in the Olympics.

As for the word of the day, I have to admit, it’s one of my favorites: yet again, from the awesome Anu Garg:

froufrou

Jackie Kennedy’s wedding dress

Pronunciation:  (FROO-froo)
MEANING:
noun:
1. Something fancy, elaborate, and showy.
2. A rustling sound, as of a silk dress.
ETYMOLOGY:
From French, of imitative origin. Earliest documented use: 1870.
USAGE:
“Too often I go to some lunch party and am presented with an exquisite froufrou creation when what I long for is the pasta the three-year-old sitting next to me is given.”
Nigella Lawson; Indulge a Childhood Craving; Calgary Herald (Canada); Aug 23, 2003.
The wedding dress to the left was worn by Jackie Kennedy. For me, when I hear the word froufrou I always think of something like this!

Finally, this listening. I realize that fasting Ramadhan is not about the physical benefit for the fasting person. Nevertheless, I wonder it the physical benefit isn’t part of it – and Allahu allem.  In the Qur’an Allah states – the meaning of which is – “…But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.” {2:184}
The following listening comes from the BBC – and the information is not only fascinating about the recently discovered benefits of fasting, but the benefits of fasting twice a week are even mentioned! This is great listening practice and very pertinent information indeed, masha’Allah. Can fasting be good for the brain? Neuroscientist Prof Mark Mattson asserts that fasting makes cells stronger.
